Some will be more difficult than others (long term ones like finances will probably be the most difficult), while others may be more attainable in the short term (like the caffeine). This is great idea... because it will allow you to take solace in the short term accomplishments while still striving for those longer goals!

I hope you continue to blog about your progress with stuff like running, but I'd love to hear about the other stuff like finances, too. I would have several hundred new posts after just a day or two and it would take me so long to get through everything. I realized that I was rationalizing... I was thinking I was going to "miss" something if I didn't read it all, but it really wasn't worth all the time I was spending reading it!

I still need to weed some of it out, I think... but it's lots better than it used to be! I found a website called archive.org that has tons (thousands and thousands) of free concerts from all sorts of artists. There's so much content that it's a bit daunting to sift through... but once you find a band you like that's on there, you've got tons of live shows that you can download for free.

Here's a list of the bands:

http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

This has been a great way for me to keep getting lots of good music and not having to fork over tons of money for it!PointSpecialhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15355874585604397464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6680585493091133030.post-27773895196526023642009-02-02T21:34:00.000-05:002009-02-02T21:34:00.000-05:00Michael,For some reason I wasn't getting your post...Michael,

For some reason I wasn't getting your posts... then I just got like 10 of them today on my Google reader... weird!

It's so hard to decide about grad school... in some respects, it seems like the "thing to do" to give yourself the head up on the competition for jobs... but to get it, you've gotta fork over lots of money (or take out more loans), so you're set back that much... and you're not guaranteed to actually GET that job once you're done.

But having that MBA will allow you to seriously go after positions that you'd only have a chance for with experience. It's a tough give and take!

One thing I'd suggest would be to get "in" with some of your profs or the other people at your school who may have some connections. That might get your foot in the door and get you an extra interview or two.

I know what you mean about budgeting right now, too... my twins are now 3 months old and my wife hasn't been working for about 4 months. So instead of two incomes supporting two people, we've got one supporting 4. Ouch!

One thing that we did right when we got married and something we've gotten back to is called a zero based budget. That means that you give all of your money a "place" so that it doesn't just disappear. Now, those places will be for rent/mortgage, and gas, and food, but make sure you budget for a "blow" fund... that you can use on whatever you need. That gives you some latitude to buy what you want to buy... but it limits the amount you can actually spend so you don't over spend.

When we did it, I realized that I was spending over $300 per month on fast food alone. Amazing once I started packing my lunch how much extra money I had to work with!

Good luck with the budget stuff... it takes discipline, but it is actually freeing when you don't have to worry as much about where all the money went.

A good resource that we used is www.daveramsey.comPointSpecialhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15355874585604397464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6680585493091133030.post-5899944570979233382009-01-28T22:24:00.000-05:002009-01-28T22:24:00.000-05:00Keep up the great work. My plan is just to slowly increase my distances each week and try to incorporate more hills. I'm hoping that by race day the 5k will seem almost easy. It doesn't count at all for bone density or muscle tone. My BMI right now is 34.8, and by anyone's standards, I'm overweight. But for me to get down to my "normal" weight, I'd have to get down to 232. When I was training hardcore for college athletics, I was at around 245, at the minimum. Since then, I've added quite a bit of muscle. And muscle is denser than fat (heavier), so as you lose fat and gain muscle, you won't lose as much weight as if you just lost the fat (but your body will be healthier).

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to be considered "normal" for the BMI calculator. And though I'm not using that as a cop out, that's ok with me. There are way too many other factors that go into it that aren't taken into account when just taking height and weight!!PointSpecialhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15355874585604397464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6680585493091133030.post-58713020456109851742008-08-19T12:27:00.000-04:002008-08-19T12:27:00.000-04:00For me, if I think I've eaten too much, I worry ab...For me, if I think I've eaten too much, I worry about it when exercise and then it becomes a problem. I'm also not much of a morning person, so by the time I run, I've eaten throughout the day. If I had a morning 5k, knowing my stomach, I'd probably only have a 1/2 cup of yogurt and a half of a banana and a small cup of coffee. If I had a 10k, maybe a bowl of oatmeal or cereal with fruit.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15902806552855947384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6680585493091133030.post-76031348967549640142008-08-19T12:14:00.000-04:002008-08-19T12:14:00.000-04:00Way to power through when the going got tough! And ...Way to power through when the going got tough!

And I know what you mean about eating... I struggled with that back in college with working out a bit. I would have class right up until I had practice, and I was starving so I wanted to eat something, but it couldn't be too much, otherwise I wasn't worth anything at practice!

I also have been thinking about what I'm going to do pre-race for my 5k. In 2 of my 3 races (two 5k and one 10k), I didn't eat anything before... and I really felt it, especially during the 10k. I have about an hour drive to where I'm running (unless I stay at my parent's, which I may do, and then it will only be about 20 mins), but I need to actually get some nurishment prior... just not too close to the race!PointSpecialhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15355874585604397464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6680585493091133030.post-20590695726898420862008-08-16T17:15:00.000-04:002008-08-16T17:15:00.000-04:00You're a lot farther along than I am, but I found ...You're a lot farther along than I am, but I found a cool link:
http://shepherdweb.com/lab/2007/Couch-to-5K/Couch-to-5K.html

It's a checklist for the different workouts.

I'm really impressed with yesterday's results... that's just about 2/3 of the way and you'll be ready to run the 5k!
